10/6 6:30pm, 1320 DCL Company Presentation Allianz

Over the past five years the S&P500 reached all time highs, only to lose over half its value in less than a year and a half. During this same time period, interest rates reached all time lows, then rebounded, and then fell again. For insurance companies that base their guarantees on market performance and have to invest their premiums in this volatile market, how are they to stay profitable, let alone in business? One of the answers is hedging and it has become an integral part of actuaries’ work. This presentation introduces some hedging topics and allows students to gain knowledge of what hedges are, how they are used, and what different hedge strategies look like. The presentation is followed by an interactive game that explores the benefits of dynamic vs. static hedging.
