ASC Company Presentations

Company Presentations offer students the opportunity to learn about employers, network, and learn more about the actuarial profession in a creative setting.  Employers integrate case studies, career skills, and social events into company presentations to create valuable learning opportunities.
This year the company presentations were a huge success. We average around 60 members at every presentation and we are very thankful the companies were able to take time out of their busy schedules to come to campus to give us exposure to the actuarial world.

2009 Company Presentations in Review:

Thursday September 3rd: Oliver Wyman and Mercer

The first presentation of the year provided great insight into 2 great companies. Mercer started with a career presentation followed by a question and answer panel with a few full time associates. Oliver Wyman performed a creative skit featuring “Olive Illinois” and expressed the key details in a Property and Casualty consulting firm. Silvermine subs were provided and they went fast.

Thursday September 10th: CNA Interview and Resume Workshop
Two University of Illinois alumni, Brian Alvin and Jen Yeh returned to campus to tune up and refresh the club’s skills on interviewing and resume building. First, Jen started out with a very informative presentation about the perfect resume followed by Brian performing multiple skits on the “dos and don’ts” during an interview.

Wednesday September 16th: Deloitte
Deloitte’s annual Round Table event was held at Papa Del’s this year. This offered an informal session with multiple actuaries from their 4 fields (Health, Life, Retirement, and Property and Casualty) to discuss their professions with the club members while feasting on delicious deep dish pizza.

Thursday September 17th: State Farm
State Farm performed an interesting case study involving auto insurance during the current economy. State Farm provided some brain fuel with Jimmy John’s sandwiches to help the students apply their knowledge into the actuarial field. Students broke into groups to discuss the case study and work together to figure out a solution. After the small discussions, State Farm explained the real answers and really gave a great preview of the property and casualty world.

Wednesday September 23rd: Towers Perrin
Towers Perrin performed a small overview of the consulting world of employee benefits. The night started out with the presentation being catered by Chipotle. Following the food, students were asked to break into groups to discuss what benefits they would really want when choosing a company to work for. Students’ answers ranged from healthcare, retirement plans, to even free coffee in the work force. In the end, Towers Perrin showed them that this is only a small part of a larger process they perform on a daily basis for their clients.

Wednesday September 30th: CNA
CNA performed a case study game through the explanation of loss triangles. The club was divided into teams of 5 to predict the future losses the insured might experience due to past trends and future assumptions. The game really took the basic overview of the property and casualty world and took it one step further. On top of the game, ice cream treats and popsicles were served for a nice cool treat.

Wednesday October 7th: Hewitt Associates
Hewitt performed a short career presentation followed by an interesting study of all the tools they use in their consulting practice. Two Hewitt actuaries explained two tools used to determine retirement and pension plans and how it will affect a specific age group. On top of the interesting study, Papa Del’s pizza was served.

Thursday October 8th: Allstate (Property and Casualty)
Allstate decided to take a new spin on their company presentation. They created an actuarial version of the Price is Right. Student interaction was involved and really provided a fun way to inform the club about Allstate. Papa Del’s pizza was served too.

Wednesday October 14th: Milliman
Milliman started the night with Papa John’s Pizza and then brought along 3 actuaries from their 3 different practices (Property and Casualty, Risk and Financial Services, and Health). Each actuary discussed their field of study and gave the students a great perspective of the type of work they do.
