Position: Company Presentations Chair

Candidates: Drew Justus, Sarah Manuel, & Grant Wahlheim

  Christina Oda

Drew Justus

I’m Drew Justus. I’m a sophomore and I am running for Company Presentations Chair. As Company Presentations Chair, I feel that I would be able to get recruiters more involved in conversation with club members at presentations and company sponsored events, leading to stronger connections between the club and companies. My goals to improve Actuarial Science Club from the Company Presentations Chair position would be to increase cumulative club member turnout by 50% for company presentations and to get actuarial recruiters to come to Champaign for career fairs beyond the Actuarial Meet the Firms night, so that we, as a club, can develop more lasting connections with companies.

Grant Wahlheim

Sarah Manuel

Hi everyone! I’m Sarah Manuel, a sophomore and the current ASC Secretary.

Here are some reasons I’d be a great Company Presentations Chair:

  • I’ve gone to all but 3 presentations in my 2 years here - I know what works and what doesn’t
  • I’ve met most of the representatives who do the presentations – they’d be working with someone familiar
  • I’ve learned what students want to know about a company, and I’ll ask questions if they skip important info

& Some ideas for next year:

  • Ask you what food you like this year – companies will know what you want from the beginning
  • Let them know to leave more time for one-on-one questions at the end
  • Give all companies the names of people who come - they’ll remember you at Meet The Firms & interviews
Feel free to talk to me if you have any questions!

Grant Wahlheim

Hello everybody my name is Grant Wahlheim and I am currently a junior here at the University.  I will be working at State Farm in Bloomington this upcoming summer as an intern in their Life/Health division.  As the company presentations chair for the club I would work on bringing as many different and diverse companies to come present to the club as is possible.  These presentations are one of the most important aspects of the club and it is extremely valuable for students to have many opportunities to see what it’s like to be an actuary and to gain an insight to what kind of work actuaries really do on a daily basis.  I would be sure to bring in representatives of a very diverse group of companies that include both insurance and consulting and bigger companies but also some smaller less known companies to give you an opportunity to see and hear from people you may not have known before.  If elected to this position I would try and make sure that presentations fell on different days throughout the week of Monday through Thursday instead of just on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the most part to make sure everyone in the club is able to attend even if they are busy on some of those nights on a weekly basis.  Thank you in advance for considering me for this position and I promise a vote for me would not leave you disappointed!

Position: Social Chair

Stephanie Bobbitt

Hey everyone!  I’m Stephanie Bobbitt, a junior majoring in Actuarial Science and Finance, and I would love to be the new social chair!  After joining the actuarial science program a year ago, I found that our major is full of bright, friendly, and fun people, and it would be great for everyone to get to know each other better!
I believe I would be a great fit for this position.  I am currently on the executive board for my business organization and dance company, so I have learned how to effectively run a club and be a leader.  Also, by being involved in these other clubs on campus, I have many ideas for social events.  For example, one event I would love to plan next year is a big potluck dinner!  Everyone that attends can bring some of their favorite dish/snack, and we can all enjoy a great meal together!  And the best part?  Asking your classmates for some last minute help on the homework due that week!
I would love the chance to make our club even better by planning more frequent social events and doing more with the mentorship program, so please, vote for me for social chair!

Christy Chiappetta

Hello,

Hi, I’m Christy Chiappetta and am running for the position of Social Chair. I am currently a sophomore in actuarial science studying abroad in Perth, Australia. What can I bring to this position? I have been involved in the club since Fall 2010 and have had some great experiences – I’d like to continue that strong tradition and bring some new events to the club, such as a Laser Tag night and an Amazing Race day in Champaign-Urbana. My planning and execution skills are excellent, as demonstrated recently by my designing, organizing, and implementing the first ever “Unofficial” at the University of Western Australia. I would also like to have as much student input as possible – I want to coordinate events that people look forward to attending!
Vote for Christy, and you’ll have no worries! Cheers!

Shu Zhang

HELLO everyone! I'm Shu Zhang, a highly self-motivated freshman with a sophomore standing and 4.00 GPA. This year so far I've been active in academic researches and passed P/1 and FM/2. I also enjoyed being involved in a majority of social events in ASC and I really want to contribute more to strengthen the social connections in our club by planning coolest social events that you'll love!

From my experience of organizing big charity sales at UNICEF as well as study groups and festival parties in student organizations, I learnt that regular and well-organized social events essentially help members get to know each other and obtain valuable information. So if selected, I would:

-       Build up social networks to make contacts between members, alumnus, professors and companies more direct and convenient.

-       Hold a regular social dinner, after which an honored guest is invited to give a presentation about work/intern experience, professional skills or any related subject that could interests you.

-       Assign members into small groups based on dorm and school year (class level). Small group leaders selected are encouraged to organize study group or hangouts at least once a week.

There are a lot more ways to improve the club and I'd also be more than happy to hear ideas and feedbacks from you! All in all, I am prepared and confident of leading ASC members to social progress and career success with my enthusiastic energy!!! Please vote for me and I promise you won't regret it!

Position: Treasurer

Candidates: Christy Chiappetta, Agape Hsieh, Sibo Liu, Ali Akbar Mundrawal, Omotayo Oladipo,Grant Wahlheim, & Chris Zajeski

Grant Wahlheim

Christy Chiappetta

Hi, I’m Christy Chiappetta and am running for the position of Treasurer. I am currently a sophomore in actuarial science studying abroad in Perth, Australia. What can I bring to this position? This role demands organization and timeliness, two qualities that describe me perfectly! Also, my experience in Australia with overseas banking and exchange rates has given me a renewed appreciation of the value of money; I will ensure we use the club funds in the most efficient, effective way possible. While company presentations are invaluable to this club, I believe the members would benefit from social outings with companies – it would provide a fun and informal way to get to know the actuarial profession. Also, I think we should direct more funds into club social events in first semester; I always enjoy getting to spend leisure time with fellow actuarial students, as well as exploring the Champaign-Urbana campus for fun excursions!
Vote for Christy, and you’ll have no worries! Cheers!

Agape Hsieh

Hi my name's Agape Hsieh, a sophomore hoping to become your Treasurer next year. I can excel as a treasurer because

-  I'm organized, tenacious, teamwork-oriented, and clear-minded

-  I'm experienced in treasurer work: I've been an intern at the Bank of Beijing, treasurer of Culture on Edge for a year, and the president of Environmental Club in high school for three years. These experiences prepare me well for times when the club is in need of fundraisers and SORF funds applications.

-  I'm enthusiastic about the future prospects of the club. I'd like to add onto the club events more fundraisers, which could also be social events, such as bake sales, and making and selling witty t-shirts on the quad. I'd like to also add to our events case competitions from companies that are willing to give students a chance to implement textbook knowledge and creativity into real world problems.

Sibo Liu

Hello everybody! I am Sibo Liu and my English name is Andreana. Currently, I am a sophomore with a junior standing. And I want to be your Treasurer for next year.

I have a strong sense of responsibility. At the beginning of a new semester, I will collect all the club duties and prepare a detailed budget report to make sure our club runs smoothly. In addition, a good treasurer should be meticulous and well-organized, which describes my characteristics. I will keep detailed records of every expenditure that we make and try my best to use the money efficiently. Furthermore, I would like to cooperate with other board members and provide my help whenever it’s needed.

I believe that I am able to make a unique contribution to this club, and look forward to starting this process! Thank you for your consideration.

Sibo Liu

Ali Akbar Mundrawal

Hello everyone my name is Ali Akbar Mundrawal and I am a freshman here at the University of Illinois running for the position of Treasure of ASC.  As the treasure for the ASC I will ensure proper bookkeeping, as well as find ways to save money for the club so it can be spent on other club activities.  I have had previous experience working as an executive board member in the funding board for my residence hall allocating money for various student activities.  I believe through this experience I have learned how to manage money when it comes to student activities.  Also as a treasure I will ensure that there is enough funding for the ASC, so we can host more events for the members of ASC to get involved in.

Weixi Liu

Omotayo Oladipo

Hey everyone my name is Omotayo Oladipo and I am currently a freshman majoring in Actuarial Science. As a member of the executive board I would try to be more involved and get to know all of the members of the Actuarial Science Club. As the treasurer I would strive to find ways to save the club money from unnecessary expenses while still budgeting for club activities. I would make a great treasurer because I have great budgeting skills and I am also very organized. When I was younger, I was like the neighborhood bank helping all the kids budget their money. Although I am only a freshman, I am very dedicated to helping the Actuarial Science Club succeed and if I am elected, i promise that I will be true to my word and help the club improve its budgeting.

Grant Wahlheim

Hello everybody my name is Grant Wahlheim and I am currently a junior here at the University.  I will be working at State Farm in Bloomington this upcoming summer as an intern in their Life/Health division.  As the treasurer for the club I feel as if I would be able find ways of saving the club money to be spent on other activities.  I have always lived with a budget in mind so making sure there are no unnecessary expenses is something that would come easily to me.  In order to improve some aspects of the club I would try to suggest other activities to get all members of the club more actively involved and make sure everyone gets included.  Some of these activities would include funding field trips to more companies than in previous years.  Also including trips to insurance companies as well rather than just consulting firms.  By voting for me I promise that you would not be disappointed with your decision and would represent the club in the best way possible.

Yanshu Guo

Chris Zajeski

My name is Chris Zajeski, and I’m currently a first year student in Actuarial Science.  Even though it’s my first year at university, I entered with enough advanced credits from high school to be in sophomore standing.  I passed Exam FM this past December and plan on sitting Exam P in May.  I think I will do well as treasurer because I am very meticulous, responsible and organized.  I have a good idea of the functioning and variety of events because I have been an active member of the Actuarial Science Club.  I was treasurer for my high school’s National Honor Society and I was also an assistant bookkeeper for a local car dealership so I have prior leadership and bookkeeping experience.  I would change the Actuarial Science Club to make it better by creating more exam-based events, such as study groups, workshops, etc.  Additionally, I would make more informative events so students can learn things outside the classroom, such as about the actuarial profession, computer programming and other topics that would be important for the actuarial profession.

Position: Newsletter Chair

Candidate: Agape Hsieh & Yangneng Zhang

Jenna Howell

Agape Hsieh

Hi everyone! My name's Agape Hsieh and I'm a sophomore hoping to become your Newsletter Chair. I have enjoyed being a part of the actsci club and would like to further my experience by serving on the board.

Apart from being organized and detail-oriented, I'm also meticulous and creative. I enjoy creating flyers, posters and any other means of communication that are eye-catching yet appropriate. My prior experience in teamwork and journalism have prepared me well for the Newsletter Chair tasks. I'm adept in photo editing, and have decent writing and editing skills. Having contributed to the Alumni Newsletter over the past year, I have gained a general perspective of what's expected and what needs to be done.

I would improve the club in working to expand the connections that the club has to not only other clubs within the University such as Pi Mu Epsilon but also to international actuarial honor societies. I would like to see more of our members network with actuarial students in other universities. I would also like to help students explore the versatility of our actuarial science degree by reaching out to different types of companies and having them present to the club.

Yangneng Zhang

Hello, everyone. My name is Yangneng (Cathy) Zhang, a freshman majoring in Actuarial Science. Have volunteered and participated in many events held the club, I hope I can contribute more by taking this chance to run the Newsletter Chair. Newsletter is one important medium informing members the events and keeps us aware of participating them. Enjoying the convenience brought by it for almost two semesters, I am eager to add my effort to make it better. I used to design and paint flyers, blackboard newspaper, stages for play in high school. I am also highly organized and efficient. I have some skills of editing pictures which will help, too. One improvement I think would help is set up a workshop called “Day being real”. This workshop can give the students opportunity to actually work as actuaries for one day. We can ask companies to assign mock tasks and let students finish it either in groups and individually. Not only the students can have a taste of what real actuary does but also the companies are able to select potential employees. Another suggestion is about the newsletter: I hope we can add hyperlinks into the events on the newsletter through which members can learn more information about it.

Position: Secretary

Candidates: Stephanie Bobbitt, Kaili Gu, Ali Akbar Mundrawal, & Yangneng Zhang

Jackie Ream

Stephanie Bobbitt

Hey everyone!  I’m Stephanie Bobbitt, a junior majoring in Actuarial Science and Finance, and I want to be the new Actuarial Science Club secretary!
I have past experience as a secretary for a business club I am involved with on campus, so I know how to keep track of all attendance records and meeting notes.  I am naturally very organized and detail-oriented, so this position fits my skills perfectly.  I will also have a light class load next year, so I will be very available to help the rest of the executive team with anything they need.
As secretary, I would love to create a member database where members that would like to participate can submit their email address, the classes they are currently taking/have taken, any exams they have passed, and past internships, so students can contact each other more easily with any questions they may have about school and work.  This would also help students get to know each other better, which is another goal I have for the club.  Please help me make our club a better experience for you, and vote for me for secretary!

Kaili Gu

Hi! I am Kaili Gu. I am a sophomore and I want to be the secretary.  I am a considerate person making plans.  I have been in many leadership experiences before, and specially, I have experience in being a secretary once of Journalist Association in Qingdao when I was in high school, and I did an excellent job.  Therefore, if I can be a secretary, I believe I will get familiar with what I should do quickly.  I also like to do volunteer works, so I will be enthusiastic of planning volunteer events.  I came up two ideas to improve the ASC, which are setting up a BBS on ASC website and contacting more international companies for seeking internships.  The BBS will be convenient and helpful for members discussing with each other about their experiences or thoughts of actuarial exams or internships; and international companies may give international students more chances for internships.  Hope I can help with ASC!

Ali Akbar Mundrawal

Hello everyone my name is Ali Akbar Mundrawal and I am a freshman here at the University of Illinois running for the position of Secretary of ASC.  I am very organized and thorough with my work.  As part of an executive board member in the funding board for my residence hall I have experience dealing with people as well as creating and managing events that benefit the student body.  As Secretary I would hold more social events throughout the year which focus on networking. Additionally I would include volunteering activity, because I believe that volunteering is a great way to not only help out our society but also a great networking medium will help get our name out there.

Yangneng Zhang

Hello, everyone. My name is Yangneng (Cathy) Zhang, a freshman majoring in Actuarial Science. Have volunteered and participated in many events held the club, I hope I can contribute more by taking this chance to run the Sectary. I'm highly organized and efficient. I have a quick but clear handwriting and can always catch the points while taking notes. I will make sure everything is well set for the board meeting. I used to intern as a business personal in a large garment corporation, so I have plenty of experience making everything is running properly. One improvement I think would help is set up a workshop called “Day being real”. This workshop can give the tudents opportunity to actually work as actuaries for one day. We can ask companies to assign
mock tasks and let students finish it either in groups and individually. Not only the students can have a taste of what real actuary does but also the companies are able to select potential employees.
